Andropause
It is a well known fact
that women undergo a phase in their lives called menopause, which arises with a drop in hormone levels. However, men also pause through a similar phase called
andropause or male menopause where they too experience reduced hormone levels in their bodies.
When in andropause, the male experiences either undesirable or no symptoms at all. It is normal for men to have a decrease in the level of testosterone as they age. In fact, about 25% of men aged 50 and older have low testosterone levels that cause symptoms of andropause.
Physicians have always confused the symptoms of andropause with other conditions. In olden days, men suffering from mood swings and fatigue are treated with anti-depressants and those suffering from insomnia are given sleep aids. However, today physicians ask men who approach them for help to answer short quizzes to find out if these symptoms are due to low testosterone levels or any other similar conditions.
With the decrease of testosterone and the onset of andropause, men usually experience a loss of energy and sex drive and become very moody. When in andropause, the man finds it difficult to achieve and to maintain an erection with a loss of physical agility in him.
Other symptoms of andropause are nervousness, hair loss, insomnia and a drop in levels of concentration. An increase in body fat and weight along with a reduction of muscle strength in the upper body are all signs of andropause.
Statistics show that most men above the year of 30 usually have bouts of depression and it has been inferred that this is basically due to the onset of andropause. Depression in the male arises with the lowering of testosterone levels in the bloodstream. This is why it is advised that men should visit their physician regularly.
Some men don't visit the doctor for physical checkup at all. This is not a good habit. It is important for men above the age of 40 to make a compulsory visit to the doctor to find out if he suffers from andropause. It is possible to find out if your testosterone levels are lower than normal with a simple blood test. The treatment for andropause is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).
With TRT, the male's body is re-energized wherein lean mass is increased and fat accumulation reversed. It even reverses muscular atrophy of aging and improves the life of middle aged men. This is due to the severity of age-related diseases like osteoporosis and cardiovascular is reduced. TRT is administered through oral, intra-muscular injection, trans-dermal patches and sublingual means; depending on the physician.
