Depression and Risky Sex

with symptoms of depression are four times more likely to indulge in unsafe sexual acts than their healthier counterparts, according to a study conducted by the researchers from the Brown Medical School Bradley and Children's Research Center.
The results of the study that is been published in the Journal of Adolescent Health points out that depression related symptoms such as
feeling sad for no reasons, feeling lonely, and feeling worthlessness could lead them to involve in sex without protection or undertake other sexual acts that are considered risky from a health point of view.
The study was conducted in adolescents and adults - aged between 15 and 21 years - based in Atlanta and Providence. They were put through a survey in which they were asked about the number of times they had veered off from the safety axis in the past three months, their attitude towards
safe sex and condom usage, and a number of questions to judge their psychological state. All questions were prepared by experts in the respective fields.
The answer patterns showed that those with depressive symptoms had a greater tendency to indulge in unsafe sexual acts than those with no symptoms at all. Based on the results, the researchers have concluded that these findings have a greater relevance in the present day world scene of
sexually transmitted diseases (STD) including AIDS, and hence it must be incorporated into adolescent’s HIV risk assessment standards at the earliest. Statistics show that even though only 12% of American population is Black Americans, more than 50% of HIV infected in US is from this category alone.
The research team believes that if this trend can be reversed by timely assessing the depression related symptoms and curing it promptly, the chances of sexually transmitted diseases spreading can be controlled in a very efficient way, not only in US but also in a global scale.
The research team further observed that African American high school students are more likely (67%) to have had sexual intercourses in their teens - than their Hispanic and Caucasian counterparts - and are more likely to have had more than four sex partners in their lifetime (29%). The team also noted that the tendency for unprotected sex is more in older adolescents and females.
The scholars from Brown Medical School Bradley and Children's Research Center have studied the root cause of a social issue and proposed its possible cures. But, how the governments of various countries are going to implement these findings is something we all need to wait and see. Let us hope that they will act before it gets too late!
