Early Puberty
 According to public health experts
based in Liverpool John Moores University, while puberty happens at an earlier age these days, the society's support for the new crop of adolescents is lagging far behind.
In the article published in the journal The Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, researchers' note that the onset of puberty had fell steadily in the past 150 years, and an astonishing three year drop in the last hundred years alone, but the society at large had failed to recognize or acknowledge the physical and emotional changes that are occurring in the youngsters at such an earlier age. The gap is alarming.
The reason for early puberty, experts attributes it to the healthy and improved nutrition a child gets these days as opposed to his/her counterparts a century back. Another reason, according to scientists, that advances puberty is stress.
Stress, borne out of parent divorces and absentee fathers, could fast-track the onset of puberty, say the research scientists. Unfortunately, this negative trend of increased divorce rates and single-parenthood is getting worse by the day, so is the stress on young children.
According to the study, when early puberty occurs, there forms a gap between what is called the 'physical puberty' and 'social puberty' or mature behaviors. When the society, teachers, and parents fail to bridge this gap at the earliest possible, the teenager could find it difficult to adapt to the sudden changes, physically and emotionally.
The increased hormone levels may be pushing the teen's body in its growth spiral towards adulthood, but his/her mental development might not be that fast enough to synchronize with the new physical maturity.
The result, immaturity in decision making and ill informed health damaging behaviors! Substance abuse, self harm, unprotected sex, violence and bullying are some possible outcomes of this imbalance between physical and mental maturity levels.
Further, adding fuel to fire - the cold response from the society to early puberty - is the exploitation of this class of youngsters with gusto by the commercial sector. By having sexually appealing imagery in their marketing ads, the commercial players are matching each other in trying to grab the attention and patronage of the teenagers for their products.
But, as experts point out, what they forget or ignore is the fact that such visuals actually adds to the existing confusion caused due to ongoing biological transition from childhood to adulthood.
Youngsters, at this age, require education and information about their biological clock and support from their families and society, and not misinformation or misguidance. Hope our so-called educated society will show more sense sooner before it gets too late.
