Family History and Teen Sexual Behaviors
Family history
and teen sex behavior are interrelated, according to a research paper published in the American Journal of Health Behavior. The study, primarily focused on African Americans and Hispanics, showed that sons of men who had fathered in their teens, are three times more sexually active than their counterparts who are sons of fathers who are not teen dads.
In the case of Hispanics, sons of teenage dads were 10 times more sexually active than sons of non-teen parents. The study was done on 178 teenagers from San Bernardino County in California, which has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in US.
The study showed that abstinence based messages may not always work and its effect is limited to those adolescents only who do not consider themselves sex-ready. For sexually active teenagers, tailored messages that exactly address their sexual desires can only make a change in their current behaviors.
Another interesting finding was that black teens who regularly attended church and Hispanic teens whose parents had a stricter or conservative attitude towards teenage sex showed less inclination to indulge in teenage sexual activities (the vice versa phenomenon - with children of parents with a permissive attitude towards sex showing more inclination towards teen sex - was also observed).
On the basis of these observations, the research team had concluded that empowered parents, to monitor the behavior and activities of teenagers on a daily basis is one effective way to prevent or reduce risky sexual behavior in teens and adolescents.
The study also undoubtedly proved that teen sexual behavior is heavily influenced by the social and economic makeup of their families and the communities in which they live in as well. In the present survey, more than half the number of participants in the survey who are sexually active teens came from single-parent homes and all of them belonged to low-income families.
However, experts point out that this observation cannot be race specific - as socioeconomic factors are above ethnicity and race - and the same trend could be observed in any other community surviving in similar or equivalent conditions.
Summing up the observations made by the study, the team leader Naphtal Kaberege Rucibwa, Dr.P.H., of Loma Linda University and his fellow researchers concludes that unbridled teenage sexual behavior is a dangerous trend and it needs to be addressed at the right earnest.
They further hope that these findings might help authorities to develop better programs that could educate the teenagers and make them realize the risk of teen pregnancies and other sexual behaviors.
