Peyronie's Disease (Penis Curvature)
Peyronie's
disease or Penis Curvature is a condition wherein the penis is bent on erection because of development of plaque in the penis. It is the presence of a hard and fibrous layer of plaque that develops either on the upper or lower side of the penis that leads to
Peyronie's disease.
When erect, the plaque pulls the affected area of the penis to an angle to develop a curved penis. However, this plaque of thickened layers of erectile tissue is non-cancerous. It was in 1743 that the French surgeon
Francois de la Peyronie described this condition.
The symptoms of Peyronie's disease, besides bent and painful erection, are a thick band of hard tissue that develops on one or other sides of the penis. The diameter of the penis may also get narrowed during erection. It is the scar tissue that develops on the penis that makes it bend; sometimes, hardening occurs on both sides of the penis, wherein indentation and shortening of the penis occurs.
There is no actual cause for Peyronie's disease; however some doctors believe that it could be due to an injury to the penis where tears may have occurred in the tissue, autoimmune disorder, collagen abnormality, where collagen builds and remodels itself or because of certain medications like beta blockers and drugs used for treating seizures, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis.
Sometimes, age and heredity may play a part in Peyronie's disease. Even other conditions of hardening of tissues in the male body may lead to
Peyronie's disease like Dupuytren's contracture.
With Peyronie's disease causing a deformity in the erect penis to produce unsatisfied sex, doctors consider this to be a type of erectile dysfunction. As
Peyronie's disease sometimes improves without any treatment, doctors usually suggest waiting for some time before starting any treatment. The male may be suggested to monitor the progress of the disease for nine to twelve months to assess penile curvature, plaque formation and erectile function.
Some of the treatment options for Peyronie's disease may include surgical and non-surgical methods.
Common surgical methods include plaque excision, Nesbit plication, penile prosthesis and
plaque incision with a saphenous vein graft.
However, there is a high risk of infection on surgery, on top of the high
cost.
There are some non-surgical methods to treat Peyronie's disease, such as: administration of vitamin E and intralesional injections where drugs like collagenase or some calcium channel blockers like verapamil
are injected into the plaque.
The latest and the easiest method to
treat Peyronie's disease or Penis Curvature is by using
penis exercises. The researchers at
PenisHealth have uncovered a groundbreaking exercise that thousands of satisfied members have been using to straighten out curvatures no matter which direction the penis curves in. For more information

The choice for the best and right form of treatment will be judged by your physician. Hence it is better to approach your physician for advice on the best treatment for
Peyronie's disease.
