Prostate Cancer Surgery
Prostrate cancer
is the growth of cancerous tumors in the prostate glands. The growth of the tumors in this form of cancer is very slow, and sometimes it may take years before its presence is noted.
There seldom are any signs, symptoms or any external abnormalities that are found in prostate cancer. However, when in the advanced stages, the cancer spreads to areas surrounding the prostate and then to other areas of the body like lungs and liver. This is the point when one realizes the presence of prostate cancer because of the development of some signs and symptoms.
One of the most common treatment options for prostate cancer is prostate cancer surgery. Doctors opt for prostate cancer surgery if and when the patients are in good health, not more than 70 years of age and for those who actually prefer to take a chance with prostate cancer surgery. There are different forms of prostate cancer surgery that may be performed to help cure prostate cancer.
One of the more common forms of prostate cancer surgery is the removal of the prostate itself and its surrounding tissue. This procedure is called radical prostatectomy. This procedure may be done by cutting the perineum through a perineal prostatectomy or through retropubic prostatectomy where the lower abdomen is cut into.
Doctors opt for radical prostatectomy when the cancerous growth is restricted within the prostate and for retropubic prostatectomy when the cancer has spread to surrounding tissues.
Doctors usually remove the lymph nodes in the cancer to check for cancer before starting on any form of prostatectomy and this procedure is called pelvic lymph node dissection. If the doctor finds cancer in the lymph nodes, prostatectomy is not advised; nor is any other treatment advised at this point. Men who have had prostate cancer surgery usually suffer from impotence and
urine incontinence.
Another procedure used to provide relief from prostate cancer is transurethral resection where the cancerous growth in the male is removed from the prostate using a tool. This tool has a small wire loop at its end which is inserted through the urethra to reach the prostate.
This is not actually a surgical procedure; this is resorted to provide relief to those suffering from the cancerous growth before any other treatment is resorted to. It is also sometimes used on men who cannot have a radical prostatectomy because of some health problem or old age.
