Testicular Trauma
As the name implies,
testicular trauma is any injury the testicles experience. As the testicles are found in the scrotum hanging out of the body, where there are no muscular or bone protection, it is more susceptible to injuries. This makes it easy for it to be struck, kicked, hit or crushed when playing sports, when in a fight or in an accident.
Testicular trauma can arise because of any three reasons; it could be the result of the penetration of objects like knife or bullet. Or it could be an injury inflicted by a moving object like a ball or it could be an injury that results from the scrotum hitting an object like in a fall or in a car accident.
The basic symptom of testicular trauma is generally high pain in the testicles. In some cases, there may also be some physical injury to it via the hard covering of the testicle getting ripped. With this, there may be blood flowing from the injury. Sometimes there may also be fertility problems because of the loss of the testicle. Extreme cases of testicular trauma are where the entire testicle is ripped and cannot get repaired.
Epididymitis is another condition that can invoke testicular trauma. Here, the epididymis becomes swollen and red because of an injury or infection and if not treated, may lead to the loss of a testicle because of a block in the blood supply to the testicle. Sometimes this may be a benign problem; however, at times it may also be an indication of testicular cancer.
There have been many cases where there is no awareness of lumps, bulging or pain in testicular trauma until the groin suffers an injury and is examined. Whatever be the testicular trauma, it is important that treatment should be availed immediately. Minor conditions call for some ice, rest and perhaps some pain killers; however serious conditions do need some medical attention. With timely treatment, even testicular cancer is curable; otherwise extensive treatment through surgery, radiation and chemotherapy will be required.
It is very important to seek medical treatment if you suffer from testicular trauma in the form of swelling in the scrotum, fever, prolonged pain in the scrotum and bruising in the scrotum. The urologist is the best person to turn to for help when a person is suffering from testicular trauma. Depending on the extent of testicular trauma, you will be rendered medical help and advice accordingly.
