Trichomoniasis
 Trichomoniasis
is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STD) found in human beings, especially in those who have multiple partners and are reluctant to use condoms.
Another aspect to note about
trichomoniasis is that it is a non viral infection, and it is due to the parasite -
trichomonas vaginalis - which lives inside the urogenital tract of infected humans.
It spreads when the person carrying the parasite have unprotected sex with others. Hence, its immediate solution is to refrain from unprotected intercourse. Medicines and antibiotics come only next.
The medical condition called trichomoniasis is not life threatening, but it can cause a lot of irritation and can make one - especially teenagers - more vulnerable to HIV. Hence, it is important that any inkling be diagnosed and treated promptly.
The symptoms of trichomoniasis can appear four days after the fateful copulation. In females, the apparent symptoms can be heavy vaginal discharge, sometimes with a foul smell, itching around the vagina, pain during sex or urination, and inflamed labia.
Girls, especially sexually active teenagers, must hence learn to read the symptoms so that any possible infection can be spotted right away, when it appears for the first time, and can be treated promptly.
In men, on the other hand, the common symptoms can range from mild itching and painful urination to an inflamed scrotum and frothy discharge usually in the morning. In few cases, there won't be any apparent symptoms, in which case the diagnosis will be a bit difficult for then people won't turn up for a diagnosis at all. The only way out is to undergo diagnosis for this disease periodically.
Treatment and Prevention
As mentioned earlier, the best preventive measure is to abstain from unprotected sex. If ever want to make love, make it a point to use
latex condoms. It is the only birth control measure available that can effectively counter
trichomonas vaginalis.
Birth control techniques such as cervical caps and sponge method may be useful in controlling fertilization, but not stopping the parasite causing trichomoniasis.
Trichomoniasis is usually confirmed after a detailed genital or pelvic examination and testing urethral or vaginal samples. In ladies, trichomoniasis may also be discerned on a Pap smear. Once confirmed, it is treated using antibiotics.
In order to completely eliminate the risk of the disease from spreading
further, usually both the partners are treated at the same time, the fact
that one of them may not be having that disease not withstanding.
