Turning Prostrate Cancer Against Itself
Prostrate cancer
is the cancer occurring in the prostrate gland in men. It is a serious illness, which if not treated promptly or left untreated could spread to other parts of the body, leading to even life threatening conditions.
Statistics show that millions of people around the globe are affected by prostrate cancer every year. The common treatments for prostrate cancer are surgery and radiation therapy.
But, treatments for prostrate cancer are going to be revolutionized, if the findings made by a research team from John Hopkins University are to be believed.
According to the research papers published in a famous medical journal, prostrate cancer patient's survival and hence quality of life can be sizably improved with a new medication that actually uses an inactive molecule, which is the product of prostrate cancer itself. This new technique of turning prostrate cancer against itself is thought to make path breaking advancements in both the treatment and prevention of this malicious disease.
The discovery was made by Sam Denmeade and his research team. They developed a protoxin -PRX302- which specifically destroys prostrate cancer cells in the body. It was created by restructuring the inactive molecule, proaerolysin (PA), which is a direct byproduct of the spreading cancer, obtained by the action of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a chemical substance formed in more than normal quantities in prostrate cancer patients. This treatment methodology, however, is still in the phase I clinical trial and is yet to be implemented in a commercial scale.
The research team, lead by Sam Denmeade, first tested the protoxin PRX302 in animals and the results were quite promising. According to the team leader, injecting the protoxin into the cancer cells in the lab produced a significant regression in the cancer growth. Given the results, he adds that, it has the potential to treat men suffering from locally recurrent and advanced cancer in the prostrate. At present, as mentioned earlier, this treatment is in phase I clinical trial on men suffering from locally recurrent cancer after definitive radiation therapy.
Sam Denmeade however adds that the protoxin treatment still has to make long strides if it is to be made a really reliable treatment for prostrate cancer. He further mentions that protoxin treatment, currently, is done by injecting PRX302 straight into the cancer cells after radiation, and if it were to be a commercially and medically successful treatment, it has to be developed to use earlier, alongside treatments, especially radiation, than after it. Hope, this will happen very soon.
