Variocele
A varicocele
is comparable to the varicose vein of legs and it is basically an enlargement of the vein found within the scrotum.
This is a complication that occurs in one of five men where the infertile men are more prone to develop a varicocele. It is said that the varicocele is the cause of
low sperm production and a decrease in the quality of sperm.
Varicoceles usually develop over time; first in the left testicle. However, a varicocele in a testicle affects the overall sperm production in both testicles. On diagnose, a varicocele can be surgically repaired. There are basically no symptoms of a varicocele. However pain worsens with the day due to physical exertion; relief can be got by lying on the back. With the passing of time, varicoceles get more noticeable and this is when you can notice it.
It is during the ages between 15 and 25 that a man is at higher risk of developing varicoceles. It is not actually known what the cause of a varicocele; however, it is believed that there are abnormal veins found in the veins that prevent the flow of blood. With this, you find a backup of the blood wherein the veins tend to widen.
Varicoceles are usually discovered when evaluating fertility or during a physical exam. Though you may not feel any pain with a varicocele, you should contact the physician if there is any pain or swelling in the scrotum as there are many reasons for testicular pain. Some of these reasons may call for immediate treatment.
On examination, the physician finds a twisted, non-tender mass, comparable to a bag of worms, above the testicle. If big enough, the physician will be able to detect the varicocele when you stand up. However, if it is smaller, you may have to take a deep breath; and while holding it, bear down.
With this, the doctor will be able to detect any abnormal enlargements of the veins. If all this fails, the doctor may do a scrotal ultrasound to ensure that there are no other reasons for the enlarged scrotum.
There are some complications connected with varicoceles like infertility and shrinkage of the testicle. There is basically no treatment for varicoceles. However, if there is infertility or pain because of the varicocele, then varicocele repair may be on the cards.
With varicocele repair, the affected vein is sealed off to redirect blood flow in the veins. This is an easy procedure where it is possible to return to non-strenuous activities within two days of the procedure. Any pain from the surgery is mild, which can be cured with pain medication.
And sexual intercourse is usually not advised for at least a week. Laproscopic surgery and percutaneous embolization are also resorted to remove varicoceles.
